1. Are your doctors board certified?
Yes. All of our surgeons are board certified in surgery. They are either certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery or by the American Board of Otolaryngology in the subspecialty of plastic surgery of the head and neck.
Being board certified means that each of these surgeons has been evaluated and passed rigorous testing by these medical specialty boards.
2. Do you have a doctor in my area?
We have a network of more than 170 board-certified surgeons around the United States. More than likely, there is one near you.
3. What is the recovery time after surgery? How soon can I go back to work?
That depends greatly on what type of a procedure you are having done. For most facial plastic surgery procedures and most liposuction, you can return to work in about a week, although you may still have some visible bruising. If you are having a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) with muscle repair or a body lift, you may need to be out of work for 2 weeks or more.
How long you are out of work also depends on what you do for a living. If you have a very active job (letter carrier or gym teacher, for example) you may need to be out of work for longer than if you sit at a desk.
4. How soon can I have a consultation with the doctor? How soon can I have surgery after my consultation?
Many of our doctors offer convenient appointments within a week or so of when you contact us. This, of course, depends on the doctor's schedule. Similarly, most surgeons will be able to book your surgery within 3 to 4 weeks. You need to allow time to complete any preoperative blood work or other tests that might need to be done in advance of your surgery.
5. Can I breastfeed after getting breast implants?
Most women can usually breastfeed a baby successfully after having breast implants. Breast implants are inserted either between your natural breast and the muscles of your chest wall or under the muscles of the chest wall. They can be inserted through incisions in the fold under the breast, in the armpit, in the line between the dark area around the nipple, or through incisions in the bellybutton. If the incisions are made around the nipple, there is a greater chance of disrupting the milk ducts that carry milk from the breast tissue to the nipple during milk production.
However, you should ask about future breastfeeding during your consultation with your surgeon. Make sure your surgeon knows that you are considering breastfeeding if you plan to have children in the future.
6. What is the difference between liposuction to the abdomen and a tummy tuck?
Abdominal liposuction removes deposits of fat under the skin of the abdomen, but dos not remove excess skin. A tummy tuck (also called an abdominoplasty) removes excess fat and skin on the abdomen and repairs abdominal muscles that may have been stretched out by pregnancy or weight gain. A mini-tummy tuck just removes excess skin and fat and may also be called a dermolipectomy or panniculectomy.
The choice of which procedure to have depends on how loose the skin and muscles of your abdomen are. If you have a bit of a pot belly that is due to some fat deposits that are resistant to diet and exercise, and if you have skin with good elasticity, you are a probably a good candidate for liposuction. If your skin is stretched out and your abdominal muscles are lax, you probably need a tummy tuck.
Another difference between the two procedures is that the incisions for liposuction are very small and usually can be hidden in a natural skin fold. Incisions for a tummy tuck can be extensive. Usually, there is an incision across the lower belly that goes from hip to hip. Recovery after a full tummy tuck is also longer than that after a liposuction procedure.
7. Where is the surgery performed?
Cosmetic plastic surgery can be performed in a hospital, in a surgical center that is not attached to a hospital, or in a special surgical suite in a surgeon's office. The location of your surgery depends on several factors, including what type of procedure is being done, what facilities are available in your area, and the preferences of your surgeon. For example, a tummy tuck is more likely to be performed in a hospital, while in many cases, a rhinoplasty (nose job) can be performed in a surgeon's office.
8. Can I have more than one procedure at a time?
Certainly. Many people combine two or more plastic surgery procedures because it also combines the recovery times and reduces expenses. Common combinations include breast augmentation and liposuction, or a face lift and rhinoplasty.
However, combining procedures means that the total length of the surgery will be longer and can increase the risks of the surgeries. Not everyone is a good candidate for combined procedures, but many people are.
9. Will my information be kept confidential?
By federal law, physicians, other healthcare providers, and hospitals must keep all medical records confidential unless you specifically indicate otherwise. For example, you may be required to sign a form to allow your doctor to share information with your health insurance company.
10. Is there any age restriction?
As far as age restrictions for cosmetic plastic surgery, that varies. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration restricts saline breast implants to women over age 18 and silicone breast implants to women over age 22, except in the case of breast reconstruction. Other procedures may have age limits for medical reasons. A person should not get a nose job for strictly cosmetic reasons until their face and nose has completed or nearly completed growing, for example.
There are age restrictions on obtaining financing. You have to 18 or older to enter a contract with DoctorsSayYes®.
